In this unit, learners created their own artist books based on the theme, “passage of time.” This 11th grade arts integration English unit was based on a poem by Edgar Allan Poe, of the Dark Romanticism movement in 19th century American literature. Through the exploration of the work of contemporary artists Martin Puryear and Inka Essenhigh, students gained additional context for the work of Poe that relates more closely to their own contexts. Students created accordion fold artist books that incorporated imagery and artwork related to each individual’s past, present, and future.
